Mexican Auto Insurance
Updated September 4, 2026
A US or Canadian auto policy does not cover you in Mexico. Some policies extend a short distance past the border; almost none cover San Felipe, and "some coverage" is not the same as the coverage Mexican law expects. Buy a Mexican policy.
What matters here is liability. Mexico requires proof of financial responsibility for damage to other people and their property, and a policy from a Mexican insurer is the clean way to show it. After an accident, having recognised local coverage changes how the situation is handled — it is the difference between an insurance matter and a much longer afternoon.
Policies are sold by the day, by the trip, or by the year. If you are here for a season or living here, the annual policy is usually cheaper than repeatedly buying short ones, and it means you are never uninsured because a trip ran long.
Read what the policy actually covers: legal assistance, medical payments, and whether it covers a vehicle in storage while you are north of the border.
One catch worth repeating: your coverage generally depends on you being legally in Mexico. If your tourist permit was never stamped or has expired, your insurer may treat the policy as void.
